Mauritius: Hiking at Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant located in the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of le Morne  was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO on the 6th of July, 2008. During the 18th and early 19th Century Le Morne Brabant was a place of refuge and shelter for Maroons or runaway slaves some of whom committed suicide by jumping off the cliff to avoid being recaptured and returned to slavery,and today it is the most important slave site and maroon refuge in Mauritius as it is intimately tied with universal ideals of individual freedom and resistance to oppression. It is also one of the most preserved and wilder mountains on the island making it a home to a very large variety of endemic and  species of plants, such as the rare Trochetia Boutoniana, which is the national floral emblem and 2 rare plants: the Mandrinette and the Boucle d’Oreille. . Some steeper parts of the climb towards the top requires the use of your hands and feet to be able to progress safely, but once there the breath-taking views over the west and south-west lagoons and other parts of the island make it all the more worthwhile !
