Nestled about 2 1/2 hours drive from Cape Town, the small fishing town of Gansbaai offers a unique experience that is unmatched anywhere else in the world. This area has become renowned as one of the two places globally where the chances to spot the majestic Great White shark are exceptionally high.
Over the past few years, sightings of Great White sharks in Gansbaai have been less predictable, often making their appearance sporadic. But fear not, the natural diversity of Gansbaai means that when the Great Whites are laying low, another species often steps into the limelight. The Copper Shark has become a frequent visitor in these sparkling waters, providing an equally awe-inspiring spectacle.
Gansbaai’s primary attraction is its focus on cage diving. However, unlike some other popular shark spotting locations, you’re less likely to see breaching behaviour here. That said, an adventure in these waters is nothing short of thrilling, usually lasting between 3 to 4 hours depending on sea conditions and shark activity.
With as many as eight operators offering cage diving experiences in Gansbaai, it’s essential to choose one that ensures an environmentally friendly and educational encounter. These operators offer boats that can accommodate anywhere from 20 to 37 guests, and the diving cages can hold between 5 to 9 divers. Comfort is a priority, with facilities including upper viewing decks and toilets.
Safety is paramount in these adventures. Every dive is supervised by a trained Dive Master, and all the required permits and safety equipment are maintained to the highest standards. The steel cages are securely designed, floating on the surface, and keeping divers no more than 1 meter below the water. The best part? No experience is required! All you need to do is hold your breath and marvel at the underwater spectacle.
For those who prefer to stay dry, surface viewing is a fantastic option. Trained shark handlers bring the sharks close to the boat, giving you an up-close and personal encounter with these magnificent creatures.
To top off your adventure, professional underwater videographers are on hand to capture your experience in high-quality video. This keepsake of your shark diving experience in Gansbaai is available at a minimal cost, perfect for sharing this once-in-a-lifetime experience with family and friends.
