Get ready for an aquatic adventure like no other – the amazing sardine run of Southern Africa. We’re excited to offer an immersive 7-night, 6-day package for 2024, to witness this astonishing marine spectacle. From May to July, billions of sardines spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and set off on a northward journey along the east coast of South Africa.
The sheer number of sardines create an unparalleled feeding frenzy along the coastline. This annual event between May and August sees the sardines following a coastal current of cold water heading north from the Agulhas Bank all the way to Mozambique. In terms of biomass, this migration could give tough competition to East Africa’s famed wildebeest migration, making it one of the most impressive natural events on the planet.
This mass migration, covering a distance of over 7km long, 1.5km wide and 30 meters deep, is a sight to behold. These shoals are easily visible from spotter planes or even from the surface. But it’s not just the scale of the sardine run that’s mind-boggling. It’s the diverse array of marine predators it attracts.
Common dolphins, Cape gannets, Cape fur seals, Blacktip sharks, Dusky sharks, and Bryde’s whales are known to frequent the run, feeding off the seemingly endless supply of sardines. Even Humpback whales pass through the sardine run on their northern migration from Antarctica to Mozambique’s summer breeding grounds. Although they’re not particularly interested in the sardines, their impressive size adds an extra layer of wonder to the experience.
Little is understood about this natural phenomenon, but it is widely believed that the water temperature must drop below 21 °C for the migration to occur. This uncertainty only adds to the mystique of the sardine run, making it an unmissable event for any nature or marine life enthusiast.
Join us for this incredible journey and witness one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles. Book your spot now for our 2024 sardine run package and get ready to dive into an unforgettable experience.
