Embarking from our guesthouse, we begin our journey north, towards the majestic Swartberg Mountains. Rising nearly 900 meters above the Southern foothills, the mountains can be ascended via the world-renowned Swartberg Pass. This National monument boasts a gravel surface and is a testament to the genius of renowned road engineer, Thomas Bain, who constructed it over a four-year period. Opened to the public on 10 January 1888, the pass has stood the test of time, thanks to the dry-stone technique used in its construction, which required extreme manual labour.

As we traverse the pass, we’re surrounded by breathtaking sandstone formations, some dating back more than 300 million years. The area is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering a diverse array of “fynbos” species, from various Protea species to the “cone bush” and “pin cushions”. If we’re lucky, we might even spot a soaring Verreaux Eagle or a Jackal Buzzard. The agility of the “Klipspringer”, a small antelope native to the area, navigating the rugged sandstone formations, never fails to astound visitors.

Reaching the summit of the Swartberg Pass, known as “Die Top”, we’re treated to a 170-kilometer panoramic view over the Great Karoo. Here, we take a leisurely walk on the Swartberg Pass, during which our guide shares insights into the Leopard conservation initiative pioneered by the H.O.P.E. Foundation.

Descending the pass, our journey takes us to Prince Albert, where we enjoy a light lunch. Leaving Prince Albert, we skirt the northern slopes of the Swartberg Mountains, introducing you to the arid Great Karoo landscape, adorned with diverse succulents and karroid bush.

Our adventure continues to Meiringspoort, where we spend time at the 60-meter high waterfall, before continuing through the rest of the poort to the peaceful Little Karoo “Dorpie” – De Rust. From here, we return to the comfort of our guesthouse, carrying with us the memories of a spectacular journey through the beautiful landscapes of the Swartberg Mountains.
